Things we might not eat in Paris

Street Crepe
We’d been seeing Crepe Stands everywhere, which could mean that this is something that you can’t miss
But maybe this is a tourist cliche which you see mostly in heavy tourist areas, never with a long line.
So after a New Years Eve church concert we stopped at a Crepe Stand, ordered a savory Turkey and Cheese (admittedly a pretty bland combination) and it was a disappointment. It would have been better with salty ham or maybe nutella and banana.

Gyros
In Bastille we came home after a church concert, really hungry and ordered a gyros from the corner store near our hotel, which seemed to be fairly well populated with a middle eastern clientele. Simple, skimpy potion of meat, greasy pita. YUCK

Andouillette Sausage

Posted on Updated on

Andouillette

Andouillette is a rustic sausage, which would be difficult to find in the U.S (and not real easy to find in Paris either) It is stuffed with chitterlings (intestines) with a strong barnyard (as in manure) essence, like tripe. Ordered this at Ma Bourgogne (Place des Vosges) and I knew that I’d made the perfect choice when the waiter warned me, IF-I-WAS-SURE that I wanted to order Andouillette. But my favorite Ma Bourgogne memory is when my traveling companion ordered Lamb – medium well, but the chef refused and served this medium rare — “priceless”.

Restaurant Chez Denise

First (1st) Visit
After many trips to Paris for the Holidays (where it seemed that the restaurant was always closed between Christmas and New Years, I finally visited Chez Denise in the spring

Ordered a “salad”! A workman’s portion, plenty for 2 or 3. Basic Fresh Salad, maybe Frisee with wonderful Olive Oil dressing
(maybe I should just go for a salad and dessert)
I also had Mutton, which I have never had. Mutton in Beans. The Mutton which is very fatty was well cooked, scorched, blackened and tasty, but a huge filling dish.
And I ordered the house Brouilly (a top cru from Beaujolais that comes in a liter bottle with a house label)
Chez Denise

Next Time:
Tête de veau (French “calf’s head”) Only Available on Tuesdays?
Steak Tartar
Haddock in Buerre Blanc
Andouette (Garlic)
Beef Daube (which I imagine they will do well

From Yelp! Review:
if they have lapin (rabbit) au moutarde, get it!
onglet brochettes which is hanger steak kabob
the best steak tartare and frites to die for
End your meal with either a baba au rum or floating island if you have room. And toast Paris, Chez Denise and everyone around you with at least one glass of vieux pruneue
